The Opportunities and Challenges of Adult Education

Tomorrow, April 1, our Executive Director, Valarie Ashley, will be a guest on the Kojo Nnamdi show at 1PM.

With development coming to Anacostia, many in the Southeast D.C. community hope the new buildings and businesses will bring new job prospects for residents there.

The show will explore the challenges and opportunities for adults and older teens seeking work and the role education plays in their employment prospects.

The live stream will be available here.

The Capitol Gateway Marketplace Groundbreaking

The Capitol Gateway Marketplace is an exciting new project that will be anchored by a 135,000-SF new urban-format Walmart with a substantial grocery department. A 312-unit apartment building will include ground-floor retail with spaces ranging from 1,500 to 7,700 SF available for lease including several restaurant opportunities. A free-standing pad site, targeted for a sit-down restaurant is also available for lease.

On March 24, there was a groundbreaking ceremony that took place, at which SEM staff was in attendance.

“One of my top priorities as mayor is to build a pathway to the middle class,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “Part of that effort is providing residents with affordable, high-quality housing. But that is only half of the equation, residents also need jobs and retail options in their own neighborhoods. Capitol Gateway Marketplace will help make that goal a reality. I look forward to working with the development community and Ward 7 neighborhoods to ensure this project benefits D.C. residents and working-class families for generations to come.”

Councilmember Yvette Alexander, who recently visited Southeast Ministry and took the CASAS exam, was also in attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony.

“This is a great day not only from Ward 7, but for the entire City of Washington. We are turning this area into one of our city’s premier neighborhoods, one where residents and visitors alike can work, shop, play, make convenient use of mass transit, and enjoy safe streets and high-quality homes. I’ve participated in countless community meetings regarding this effort, and I can tell you that everyone is excited about the future here,” D.C. Councilmember Yvette Alexander said.

Date: April 18, 2015

Times: 10:00 AM – 10:45 AM & 12:00 PM – 12:45 PM

“Much has changed since my college days, when I was first introduced to computer programming, but there’s still a dearth of African-American women in science, technology, engineering, and math professions, an absence that cannot be explained by a lack of interest in these fields. Our mission is to introduce programming and technology to a new generation of coders, coders who will become builders of technological innovation and of their own futures,” she writes.

Funding Our Priorities

On Tuesday, March 17th, our staff participated in a ‘Brown Bag Lunch Lab,’ facilitated by Art in Praxis, a capacity building enterprise that specializes in placing art and culture at the center of organizational growth. Over food and interactive discussion, SEM’s staff creatively engaged in a group discussion and an individual exercise that focused on funding our priorities.

Using a mock budget of $500 and our current strategic priorities, ‘The Budget Game’ gave each staff member an opportunity to determine how much and where each staff member would allocate money for expenses. The six categories were as follows: Educators and Mentors, Employee Benefits, Client Expenses, Grant Writing, Accounting, and IT Support.

Following the idea that a budget can tell a story of how an organization plans to achieve it’s strategic priorities, our staff had different perspectives on where the money should be allocated, but we all had the same intention and vision for Southeast Ministry. “I think it was interesting to see that we all have different perspectives on where the money should go based on our roles. For instance, data systems is something that I don’t use daily, so it wasn’t a priority for me, but it’s good to see we all have the same vision for Southeast Ministry,” said Riley Grime, one of our GED instructors. “For me, I would allocate more money to grant writing and client expenses, so that the people we’re serving are getting the best services,” said Kevin Gibbs, a custodian at Southeast Ministry.

A Better Understanding

On February 21, Southeast Ministry, Bread for the City, Academy of Hope, Miriam’s Kitchen, People for Fairness Coalition, So Others Might Eat, Sasha Bruce and Fair Budget Coalition partnered up for a budget advocacy training.

Several of our adult learners attended the training, including Mr. Will Washington, who enjoyed his experience at the event. “It gave me clarity on how the (city’s) money is spent. It gave me a better understanding of what the (city’s) money is.” Mr. Washington felt as though the training was very productive and encourages more people to participate in similar types of events, “if you’re a tax paying citizen in DC, you have a voice. You should make your voice heard, no matter if you have a $100,000 paying job or a $19,000 a year paying job, you have a voice.”

The Way You Do It

On Wednesday, March 4th, our AMEN Job Readiness Instructors, November DuBose and Eric Garvanne, held a meeting for some of our active job readiness participants.

The meeting began with an open discussion about what is working, what is not working, and suggestions after an introductory icebreaker.

“We’ve got to sharpen up our game if we intend to win,” said Mr. Garvanne.

Strong feelings of excitement and hope from our job readiness participants filled the room, as they learned of the opportunities they have for the assistance they need in order to address the challenges they are meeting in the job market.
